Opposition Leader Says Won’t Take Part in National Dialogue

SANAA, 30 Jul -- Head of the opposition-led preparatory committee of national dialogue, Muhammad Ba-Sandwah announced on Friday his boycott of any future meeting between the ruling General Peoples Congress (GPC) and the opposition alliance, the Joint Meeting Parties (JMP).  Ba-Sandwah who was speaking to the al-Masder Online website  from Aman, Jordan said “I am now more convinced of the futility of any meeting between the JMP and the GPC after I heard today that the elections occupy top priority of the GPC and not the on-going crushing crises and the current problems ravaging the nation.”

SANAA, 12 Jul -- The Yemeni Center for Strategic Studies published on Monday its annual study on US, Yemeni relations saying “over the past three years, the United States’ concern about the democratic progress and huma rights in Yemen has clearly regressed and instead more focus was given to the security and military files,” adding “as a result of the lack of US support, the democratic experience in Yemen witnessed a setback, froze and led the political powers in the country to agree on the postponement of the parliamentary elections for two years.”

SANAA, 03 July -- Prominent arms dealer, Faris Manna who was released early May after three months in custody on charges of supplying the Shiite rebels in north Yemen with weapons urged on Thursday President Ali Abdullah Saleh to “stop the violations of the National Security Organization (NSA) against detainees,” adding “many prisoners explained to me the torture they were subjected to and this is shameful and not accepted by our customs and traditions.

Finance Minister Says Will Cut all Fuel Subsidies Gradually

SANAA, 28 May -- Finance Minister, Noman al-Sohaibi Thursday said fuel subsidies and tax evasions are “the biggest strains on Yemen’s finances and need to be dealt with swiftly,” News Yemen website reported.  Al-Sohaibi said falling oil production will cause the economic growth to decline by 5.0 percent in 2011 from a projected 7.0 percent and the country’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry will not support the economy in 2010 as much as was expected previously.

SANAA, 12 March -- The independent website, Marib Press Friday cited “former al-Qaeda operatives,” as saying “al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) in Yemen has been making arrangements for months to move its headquarters to the district of Arhab, 15 kilometers north of the capital, Sanaa.”  Talking to Marib Press editor, a number of al-Qaeda members, most of them from Arhab, who were released from prison a few days ago said al-Qaeda military commander in Yemen Qasim al-Rimi and AQAP chief in the country, Naser al-Wahishi “and others were telling us during meetings with them of movements to transfer the command center to Arhab,” adding “compared with remote regions such as Shabwa or Marib, it is less risky to enter Sanaa from Arhab especially suicide cars and explosive belts.”

150 Dengue Fever Cases in Taiz as Screw Worm Hits Livestock

TAIZ, 02 Oct -- A health official in the southern city of Taiz Friday said 150 cases of dengue fever have been registered in the region, stressing “teams are spaying the area of Taiz with pesticides.”  News Yemen online webiste quoted a medical source in the area as saying “hospitals in the province are receiving tens of infected cases everyday,” adding “Yemen’s International Hospital, al-Rawdah Hospital and al-Safwah Hospital continue to receive tens of cases.”  People in the region have voiced disgruntlement at what they called “official apathy,” complaining “relevant authorities have not moved until now to stop the spread of the disease and we have not heard of any spraying teams.”  Meanwhile, people in the villages of Sharab al-Rawnah in Taiz renewed their appeal to local councils to send medical teams to their areas to monitor the outbreak of the Screw Worm which has killed hundreds of livestock.  Some hundreds of sheep, goats, cows and even dogs have died in the past two weeks in the villages of Mahmadan, al-Malamah, al-Hajifah, al-Hija, Wadi al-Raqbah, al-Ahil, al-Mouriq, and al-Aradah.  A local herdsman told News Yemen “the outbreak started in the dogs then moved to the sheep and cows,” adding “we have lost tens of livestock.”

Parliament Summons NSA Deputy Head for Questioning

SANAA, 17 Oct -- The Parliament Saturday voted to summon the Deputy Head of the National Security Agency (NSA), Amar Muhammad Abdullah Saleh to question him over violations committed by NSA officers against a number of parliamentarians.  MP Abdul-Salem Zabiah was stopped last week at Sanaa Airport and NSA officer refused to let him leave the country.
