Nasserittes Warn Government against Cutting Fuel Subsidies

SANAA, 12 Jul -- In a statement at the end of its 10th annual conference, the Arab nationalist party, the Nasseritte Unionist Party Monday called for uncovering secrecy behind the assassination of president Abrahim al-Hamdi saying “people still want to know the truth and there is no justification for keeping the investigations surrounding his assassination secret after 33 years.”  The statement urged the ruling party to “answer calls for political reform,” and emphasized the “significance of the rescue document prepared by the national committee of dialogue,” and appealed to its members and sympathizers to “intensify peaceful democratic struggle and rallies in the face of  the state’s corruption, injustice, and oppression.”

General Ali Muhsen al-Ahmar Says Military Ties with Saudi Strong

SANAA, 03 Jul -- The Saudi military delegation headed by the commander of the southern region in the Kingdom, Brig. Gen. Ali Bin Zayd Khoaji left Yemen on Saturday following a few day visit, Marib Press website said.  Before departure, Gen. Khoaji told reporters “the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is keen to see Yemen secure, stable and united,” and praised “the brotherly ties between the Kingdom and Yemen.”

UN Says Lack of Funds Threatens Aid for Children in Yemen

SANAA, 28 May -- The United Nations warned on Friday that a severe lack of funding for its humanitarian operations in Yemen was threatening food programmes for vulnerable children, al-Adwa Net reported.  Spokeswoman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Elizabeth Byrs said 30 percent of severely malnourished children and pregnant women in Yemen were no longer receiving aid, adding “some 50,000 displaced and refugee children risk losing their assistance over the summer if money was not found.”  According to UN statistics, donors have given only 28 percent of the $177.0 million requested for aid in Yemen and a note from OCHA said underfunding has forced humanitarian agencies in Yemen to significantly reduce their activities across all sectors.  In related news, the French embassy in Sanaa Thursday said in a press release the French government has allocated $186.0 thousand for the non-governmental agency Triangle to fund its emergency relief programme for internally displaced persons in al-Mazraq camp in Hajja province.

Yemen Receives Six Guantanamo Prisoners

SANAA, 20 Dec -- Yemen Sunday announced it received six of its citizens from Guantanamo prison, the military website, 26-September reported citing the official spokesman of Yemen’s embassy in Washington Ahmad al-Basha.  Yemeni detainees Jamal Muhammad Alawi Mari, Farouq Ali Ahmed, Ayman Saeed Abdullah Batarfi, Mohammed Yasir Ahmed Taher, Fayad Yahya Ahmed al Reimi and Riyad Atiq Ali Abdu al Haf were sent home, according to a U.S. Justice Department statement.

UN Appeals for $177.0 to Tackle Humanitarian Crisis in Yemen

SANAA, 14 Dec -- The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Monday appealed to the international community for more than $177.0 million to provide “the basic survival needs for some 1.6 million Yemenis suffering from acute poverty and to internally displaced persons (IDPs) affected by the war between government forces and Shiite insurgents in north Yemen.”

SANAA, 08 Dec -- Speaking to reporters following the Cabinet meeting, Information Minister and government spokesperson, Hassan Ahmad al-Lawzi Tuesday said the end of the rebellion in north Yemen “is close,” adding “the state’s policy of patience and wisdom with the insurgents has paid off and this gang is now collapsing after many of its members and leaders have been destroyed.”

Ministers Discuss ‘Unified’ Mechanism to Cut Fuel Subsidies

SHABWA, 07 Nov – Speaking to hundreds of state officials, and foreign investors gathered in the southern port of Belhaf for the inauguration of Yemen’s first liquefied natural gas export, President Ali Abdullah Saleh Saturday said the war with the Shiite rebels in north Yemen “just started two days ago and what has been happening in the past six years was just training for the army units so that the troops can get accustomed to the topography of the area,” stressing “the war will never stop no matter how much money or martyrs it costs” adding “there will be no let up in the battle until we bring this traitorous and mercenary group to an end.” 

Saleh Allows Security in Sadaa 10 Days to Finish Fighting with Rebels

Parliament to Investigate Arms Shipment as Trial of al-Huthi Opens

SANAA, 26 Oct -- The Parliament Monday voted to setup a special committee to investigate the smuggled Chinese arms shipment.  The setup of the committee came after Deputy Premier for Defense and Security and Local Administration Minister, Dr. Rashad al-Alimi failed to attend yesterday’s session as was scheduled to explain to the assembly the circumstances surrounding the controversial shipment. 

Oil Ministry Ends Dispute between Jannah Hunt, Tribesmen

SHABWA, 19 Oct -- The ministry of oil and mineral resources Monday secured an agreement between tribesmen from Bal-Harith in Shabwa and the Dallas-based American Jannah Hunt Oil Company, the pro-government online website, Naba News said.

GDF Suez Wants to Send LNG from Yemen to Pacific

SANAA, 02 Oct -- The French utility GDF Suez has asked Yemen liquefied natural gas (LNG) company to divert some LNG cargoes from Yemen to destinations other than the United States and Europe, a source told the independent online news, Yemen News.  This would allow Yemen LNG to change the contract and take advantage of the higher paying markets in the Pacific region such as India and China.  Meanwhile, Dow Jones Friday quoted an unidentified individual “close to the situation,” as saying “Suez has asked to divert its cargoes to India instead of the U.S.,” adding “GDF Suez is seeking the approval from the Yemeni government for diverting its cargoes under a contract clause that aims to ensure that any deliveries from Yemen LNG end up in countries recognized by Sanaa.”  Suez in 2005 signed a 20-year sales and purchase agreement, or SPA, with Yemen LNG for 2.5 million tons of LNG per year.
