Deputy Interior Tells Rebels to Cease Testing Govt’s Patience or Else

SANAA, 30 Jul -- In a statement to the media center of the ministry of interior, Deputy Interior Minister Brig. Gen. Saleh Hussein al-Zawari Thursday urged the opposition alliance, the Joint Meeting Parties (JMP) to “come out of its silence concerning the recurrent violations of the cease-fire by the Houthi rebels and denounce their repeated aggressions on civilians and military outposts,” adding “by their silence, the political powers in the country are encouraging the Houthi elements to persist on their infringements, and stalling to implement the six peace conditions.”

Central Bank Officials Say Yemen Not Affected by Global Crisis

SANAA, 04 Jul -- In a seminar held at Saba Center for Strategic Studies, Central Bank Vice President for Accounting, Ahmad Muhammad Sunday said the world financial crisis affected interest rate returns on Yemen’s foreign reserves in 2009, reduced Yemen’s ability to meet its commitments and led to a tumble in the flow of foreign aid but he said Yemen did not lose its foreign assets, News Yemen website reported.

SANAA, 03 July -- The Arab 2009 investment report published by the Arab Corporation for Guaranteeing Investment Saturday said Arab direct investments in Yemen increased from $392.8 million in 2008 to $652.2 million in 2009, News Yemen website said.  Of the total investments, $585.0 million were invested in service sectors, $36.4 million in industrial sectors and $2.7 million in the agriculture sector while $28.1 million were spent in other sectors, said the report, adding “in 2009, Yemen received $527.5 million in investments from Qatar, $56.1 million from Iraq, $26.9 million from Libya, $21.7 million from Saudi Arabia, and $17.9 million from Kuwait.”

Interior Ministry Says al-Qaeda Member Captured in al-Beidha

SANAA, 29 May -- In a statement posted on its media center website, the ministry of interior Saturday announced the arrest of an al-Qaeda operative and the seizure of 266 CDs found in his possession that contained documents and a collection of al-Qaeda literature.  The suspect, 26-year-old D. S. A. Sharqan was arrested by security services in al-Beidha province, said the ministry’s statement, adding “the suspect was arrested on a Hyndai car and the CDs caught with him contained photos of al-Qaeda leaders, images and information of unmanned drones, as well as Goggle earth images of old houses.”
The suspect is currently under investigation, added the statement.  Meanwhile, the family of al-Qaeda leader in Yemen, Naif al-Qahtani Saturday doubted reports of his death.  His elder brother, Saed Bin Muhammad al-Qahtani told the Saudi Okaz newspaper that “the last phone call I received from Naif was two months ago during the war against the infiltrators at the southern border. Every time we receive information saying Naif is dead, we later find out he is alive,” adding “I tried my best to persuade him to return to the Kingdom, but he shocked me by saying that he had left for jihad and would only return a dead man.”  Naif al-Qahtani was implicated in the 2009 assassination attempt on Prince Muhammad Bin Naif, Assistant Minister of Saudi Interior for Security Affairs.  Meanwhile, the ministry said in a statement posted on its media center website on Saturday that abducting foreigners is equivalent to terrorism, adding it is hunting 60 suspects involved in kidnapping foreigners.

SANAA, 16 May -- The leader of the al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) Naser al-Wahishi Sunday said in an audio message addressing the American people: “Our war with you is not as superficial as your leaders are telling you.  Our war with you is connected to justice for humanity as a whole.”  He said “the war has been going for ten years in Iraq and Afghanistan despite the killing and arresting of many leaders,’ and told the US President to “tell your people, Obama, and do not hide from them the magnitude of the upcoming danger awaiting them.”

Official: Opposition Seeking to Topple Saleh’s Regime

SANAA, 11 March -- Director of the Political Circle at the ruling General People’s Congress (GPC), Dr. Ahmad Ghanim Thursday told the Saudi-owned al-Sharaq al-Awsat newspaper that the opposition alliance in Yemen, the Joint Meeting Parties (JMP) is seeking to topple President Saleh’s regime and that the JMP is grooming the alternative to come to power.  “The JMP alliance has one major goal and that is to remove President Ali Abdulalh Saleh and remove the ruling party,” he said, adding “this objective of theirs is clearly defined in their so-called rescue document.”

Defense Council Hails ‘Successful’ Operations against al-Qaeda

SANAA, 19 Dec -- In a meeting headed by President Ali Abdullah Saleh, the country’s National Defense Council Saturday reviewed a number of developments and made ‘important’ decisions regrading the activities of al-Qaeda, the defense ministry website, 26-September reported.  The council reviewed the results of the attacks on al-Qaeda hideouts in the district of Arhab, Abyan and Sanaa and hailed “the success of the joint operations carried out against al-Qaeda elements in the country,”

Houthi Rebels Say US Fighter Jets Attacked Villages in Yemen

SADAA, 14 Dec -- In a statement posted on their website, the Houthi rebels Monday said American fighter jets are bombing villages in north Yemen, adding “US warplanes and bombers have staged 28 attacks on Sadaa.”  “The US fighter jets have launched overnight attacks,” said the rebels statement.  The development comes as the British Daily Telegraphy Sunday reported that the US has sent special forces to train the Yemeni army.  US official reportedly told the Daily Telegraph that “US special forces had been sent to Yemen to prevent the country from turning into a reserve base for al-Qaeda.”
