Military, Security Forces Pull out of Northern Regions

SADAA, 27 Jul -- In a surprising move and one day after Shiite rebels took over two military outposts in Harf Sufian, the army stationed in al-Malahid region started on Monday withdrawing to the border region of Harad, the Islamist al-Sahwa Net reported.  Local sources said “the army completely evacuated its position in the strategic region of al-Malahid where it entered after three months of fighting during the sixth round of war with the rebels.”  Central security forces in the districts of Shada, Razeh and al-Daher in Sadaa also pulled out as other units stationed in Saher, al-Dalah and other regions withdrew back to the city of Sadaa.  It is not clear what actuated the withdrawals amid conflicting reports the military and security units received higher orders to leave but security sources told al-Sahwa “the withdrawals on Tuesday came after instructions from the nation’s highest security committee,” adding “the government decided to pull out its forces in response to violations of the truce committed by the rebels and a reaction to Monday’s rebel attack on the al-Zalaa military outpost in al-Amashiah area in Harf Sufian and the subsequent capture of soldiers.”

Speaker Threatens Vote of no Confidence on Government

SANAA, 12 Jul -- Speaker of Parliament Yahya al-Raei Monday threatened to call for a vote of no confidence on the government if a number of ministers failed to attend Wednesday’s session to answer MPs questions.  Member Abdul-Aziz Jubari told the assembly’s session on Monday “we should review the reply of the government and then take legal actions for vote of no confidence,” and member Nabil al-Basha said “the government is violating the constitution, holding MPs at airports and it must attend Wednesday’s session or this arrogant government must go.”  MP Abdul-Razaq al-Hajri said “what is happening today inside the parliament is the result of the Speaker’s attempts to weaken it,” but the Speaker said “if the ministers answered the questions of the members and attended the sessions, we would not have arrived at this phase,” and told the council “why don’t we leave and attend the horse race celebrations instead.”

Interior Ministry Says Explosive Belt, Bombs Seized in al-Qaeda Raid

SANAA, 06 Jul -- In a statement posted on its media center website, the ministry of interior said on Tuesday security forces that raided a house used by al-Qaeda militants in the southern region of Fawah west of Mukala city a day before found an explosive belt, hand grenades, a laptop, phone chips, video tapes, and scraps of papers.  “On Monday, four security jeeps surrounded a house in the area of Fawah where al-Qaeda members were hiding including a Saudi man.

PM Says Any U.S. Attempt to Kill al-Awlaki in Yemen Unacceptable

SANAA, 30 May -- Prime Minister Ali Mohammed Mojour Sunday said in an interview with Reuters that Yemen will not accept any U.S. attempt to kill US-Yemeni cleric Anwar al-Awlaki on Yemen’s soil, stressing “we will not accept that.  We are a sovereign country,” adding “according to the latest information, al-Awlaki is still in Shabwa south of Yemen.”  He rejected describing Yemen as a refuge for al-Qaeda saying “Yemen is not a safe haven for terrorists.  We recognize that we have al-Qaeda but they are spread out in different areas and are scared as a result of the strict crackdown by the government for all their actions,” adding “Yes, al-Qaeda is present in Yemen and it is a risk to the country but the media is exaggerating.”

In other news, Lahj News website Sunday cited a “Yemeni official,” as saying “a number of al-Qaeda leaders in Yemen met on Sunday with a high-ranking military commander from the northwestern division in the presence of foreign intelligence officers,” adding “during the meeting, al-Qaeda leaders agreed to carry out suicide operations in the northern region of Sadaa in the coming days to assassinate leaders of the Houthi group.”  The official who spoke on condition of anonymity said “the United States is working to create a center of conflict in the region of Marib between members of al-Qaeda and members of the Shiite rebels.”  Meanwhile, Yemen’s Socialist Party (YSP) Sunday appealed to international humanitarian agencies to press the Yemeni government to end its military siege of al-Dhala and Radfan regions south of the country, eleshteraki net reported.  In a statement at the end of its eighth round, the YSP called for “urgent relief aid for those regions as stocks of food, medicine and fuel have dwindled because the military is preventing the flow of these items.”  The statement repeated

SANAA, 04 May -- The spokeswoman of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) Emilia Casella Tuesday said in a news briefing that one in every three people in Yemen is suffering from chronic hunger, News Yemen website reported.  She said “one in 10 children suffers from acute malnutrition in Yemen where stunting rates are second only to Afghanistan,” adding “growing food shortages could spark further unrest or mass migration.

SANAA, 11 March -- President Saleh’s Senior Political Advisor, Dr. Abdul-Karim al-Iryani Friday denied reports Iran is supporting the secessionist movement in south Yemen and repeated his claims the Political Security Organization (PSO) in Yemen is “infiltrated by al-Qaeda,” stressing “I am not the first one or the only one who says that and I believe the 2006 jail break of al-Qaeda militants from the PSO prison in Sanaa could not have happened without the complicity of some smaller employees.”

Planning Deputy Says Yemen Needs a lot of Support, Aid

SANAA, 03 March -- Deputy Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Hisham Sharaf Tuesday said the government is planning to turn Aden into “a very special and huge economic region,” that enjoys all facilitations, capacity and funding to make Aden a workshop.  In an interview with the London-based Saudi al-Sharaq al-Awsat, Sharaf said “we will establish industrial zones near Aden so that companies can enjoy facilitations and create jobs,” adding “the government’s emergency and urgent program contains economic, financial, administrative and political reforms,” and “President Ali Abdullah Saleh wants the world to see the new reforms and this country which is said to be plagued by corruption and problems should continue on the reform path to attract investors and donors.”  He said “the new reforms won’t just be on papers and won’t be postponed from one year to another,” adding “Yemen needs a lot of support and aid as it facing a number of problems including high population growth rate, water shortages and social and economic development.”  He said unemployment in the country is standing between 15 and 18 percent, and on London conference in 2006 and donors pledges he said “it is wrong to think that London conference is everything and it was only a beginning.  Yemen needs way more that what was pledged in that conference.  A visit to rural areas in Yemen would suffice to see that every area needs a project of water, or electricity.”

Yemen Raid on al-Qaeda Kills Muslim Leader Anwar al-Awlaki

SANAA, 24 Dec -- Unconfirmed reports Thursday said Muslim lecturer and spiritual leader, Anwar al-Awlaki, who is accused of being a senior al-Qaeda recruiter and motivator was killed Thursday morning in an air raid against al-Qaeda hideout in al-Rafed region in Shabwa province.  The defense ministry website, 26-September cited an official at the Supreme Security Committee as saying the raid killed at least 30 al-Qaeda operatives including key leaders.

ABC Says U.S. Cruise Missiles Hit al-Qaeda in Yemen

SANAA, 19 Dec -- American cruise missiles Thursday targeted two alleged al-Qaeda sites in the southern village of al-Majala in Abyan, 300 kilometers south of the capital killing civilians and several al-Qaeda suspects, the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) reported on Friday quoting officials at the U.S. administration.  Yemeni authorities have claimed responsibility for the strikes saying special operations forces backed by the airstrikes killed at least 29 al-Qaeda militants and captured 17 others in a pre-dawn assault on a training camp in al-Majala.  Official media cited security officials as saying the militants were planning suicide bomb attacks against Yemeni and foreign interests including oil installations and schools.

DHAMAR, 15 Dec -- President Ali Abdullah Saleh Tuesday visited a number of military units in the region of Dhamar, 80 Kilometers south of the capital, Sanaa.  Speaking to the troops, Saleh said “our armed and security forces are the symbol of national unity and have in their ranks citizens from al-Mahra, Midi, Sadaa until Aden,” adding “our armed and security forces have taught the enemies, mercenaries and agents tough lessons and our troops have made great sacrifices to preserve the country’s security and stability.”

US Says has no Proof Iran Supporting Rebels amid News Al-Houthi Fled

MANAMA, 11 Dec --The U.S. Assistant Secretary for Near Eastern Affairs, Jeffrey Feltman Friday said the American administration has no proof that Iran is backing the Shiite rebels in north Yemen.  “Many of our friends and partners have talked to us about the possibility of outside support to the Houthis and we have heard the theories about Iranian support to the Houthis but to be frank, we don’t have independent information about this,” he told a regional conference in Bahrain.

SADAA, 04 Dec – The defense ministry Friday said 8 Houthi rebels were killed in clashes with government forces in the northern regions of Sadaa and Harf Sufian.  The ministry said “the army waged offenses against the positions of the rebels in Harf Sufian, Sadaa and al-Malahid killing eight of their leaders including Zakaria Hassan al-Houthi, Yehya Muhammad Ali, Ali Deifallah al-Kholani, Abdullah Khater, Yehya Hassan Hawi, Masfer al-Namer, Sadaam Hassan Saleh Masra and Ahsan Aqba,” adding “the troops thwarted an attempt by the insurgents to sneak into high lands in Harf Sufian and killed a number of attackers.”  The ministry’s statement said the army destroyed a number of rebels’ hideouts and positions and stopped an attempt to attack military outposts.  Other reports said two civilians were killed Thursday when a landmine allegedly planted by the rebels blew off in Wadi Jubara in Sadaa while government reports said Yemeni warplanes bombed a factory and a warehouse near al-Naqa region used by the rebels to produce explosives

Saleh Says Rebellion in North Yemen Could End in Few Days

SANAA, 18 Oct -- President Ali Abdullah Saleh Sunday said the war in north Yemen could end in a few days, stressing “we are determined to make this war with the rebels the last one.”  Saleh who was speaking to the Saudi London-based MBC Arabic satellite TV channel said “the rebels are in a bad situation as their weapons, ammunitions, supplies and fuel are running out,” adding “the troops’ moral is high and people are backing the army against the insurgents.”  In a reply to a question on why it has taken so long to subdue the rebellion, he said “this is because we are keen to preserve lives and we were hoping these outlaw elements would return to the right path but they are liars and deceivers and every time we implement a cease-fire and free their prisoners, they go back and re-group for battle.”  On the unrest in south Yemen, he said “it is not as threatening as al-Qaeda which puts the national economy at risk and threatens security and stability and the movement in the south is not as dangerous as the rebellion in Sadaa.”  He accused Iranian religious entities of supporting the Shiite rebels in north Yemen, but “we won’t accuse the Iranian regime of supporting them,” and slammed reports the war in Yemen is regional saying “Yemen is a sovereign nation and we won’t allow others to fight in our territories.”  “Al-Qaeda is supporting the Huthis and the Huthis are supporting al-Qaeda not because they have a common agenda but because both want to take revenge from the political regime.”
